Random Thoughts #23: Eloquent kids, boots, Just Be Held

Little girl trying to play with/control 2 balls: “I’m babysitting!”

“First grade is horribler!”
-a first grade boy, during “-er/-est” homework

My sister just ate her oatmeal with a fork.

“I have no idea what we are playing here.” Lamented a first grade girl as she passed with a classmate making strange playacting noises and gestures.

I really wanna see Kung Fu Panda 3.

The middle schoolers had no idea what to do with the answer of “mostly classical” that I gave to their question of what kind of music I like to listen to. That and movie soundtracks. And sometimes CCM.

This new kindergartener has the biggest vocabulary of any I’ve seen so far.
• “Darth Maul is Darth Sidious’ apprentice.”
• “This is excellent! I can make anything I want with this clay.”
• “I’m taped to the ground with indestructible metal.”
• “I’m going to do something on the monkey bars. …If I have enough courage.”
• “Or, as a alternative…”
• “Do you think that would be wise?”
• “The name of the bad guy [in a game of pretend] is Carius Matoya.”
• “And when I whirled around, there was nothing.”
• “Can you see the pupil on this bug?”
• “I was just curious…”
• “Isn’t that oddly shaped?”
• “I love my rock collection. One was all dull on the outside but had sparkling crystals on the inside.”
•”If you look closely, you can see the shimmering on this side of this rock.”
• “I’m not sure, but I’m assuming it’s this one.”
• “I’m suspecting it’s made simply by mixing clay and water together?”
• “It’s a scroll. Which they used for paper in the olden dayspapyrus.
• “I love Greek mythology!”
• “We have a situation over there.”

It’s much better to undersweeten peppermint herbal tea than to oversweeten it.

A windbreaker over branches sounds just like the wind.

These boots of mine made quite the stir the other day!image
Kindergarten girl: “Ooohh! You’re wearing your new boots!”
4th grade girl:”I really like your violet purple boots. They really shine out.”
Random lady at the library: “I LOVE your boots!”

“I’ve been rapping since I was 4.” -7 year old

Some of the daycare kiddos:
“I don’t do anything for Earth Day. What are you supposed do?”
“You clean up stuff other people littered. …For the Earth.”

“Girls like boots, don’t they?” -my sisters’ 60-something male piano teacher
XD

This song is my favorite right now.

Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
-1 Peter 5:7

Random Thoughts #12: Actually, foods, & these kids

1st graders playing “pretend” during recess:
“Okay, and pretend I didn’t care.”
“No, pretend you did.”

Oh hey! Those peanut-flavored Cheetos things I talked about last time? Dipped them in frosting and they tasted much better 😀 Vanilla was best XD

I actually like those apples that wrinkle up when they get dry. Yum 🙂 I need to do that drying apple slices for snacks thing.

The captions on our iPad got messed up so the first lines of dialogue came below and subsequent lines came on top. And now Elrond talks like Yoda. XD

When jump ropes tucked into little girls’ back collars and drifting down onto the floor turn them into Rapunzel…that’s imagination for ya!

Interesting is… A pair of women’s pants that are “raisin” in color.

This kid had a toy truck that actually folded out into Optimus Prime 😎

However did this knot get into this single strand of my hair?

Why do all the pictures of Sleeping Beauty have her in a pink dress, when for most of the movie she’s actually in a blue dress? Besides her waltzing about the forest in a peasant dress, she goes into the castle, pricks her finger, falls asleep, is woken up, and dances with the prince ALL in a blue dress. The only times her dress is pink are when it’s being made and during her wedding dance, at which times the fairies are alternating it between blue and pink. But in all the common Disney princess pictures, her dress is pink. 😕

My littlest brother to older sisters: “Can you do me a favor? Can you make more fireworks?” It was so cute, particularly because he’d never before used that first sentence 🙂

Chili hot dogs are better than chili cheeseburgers.

My littlest brother had a hard time understanding why, when my sister had an earache, she got shots in her arms and legs, not her ears.

Once you start eating it, it’s hard to stop. You do realize I’m talking about watermelon, right? 😉

This lady was wearing a plain grey-and-white striped maxi dress, but she’d jazzed it way up by adding a hat, hair tie, earrings, necklace, belt, purse, and sandals—all silver and sparkly. Completely transformed it 😎

Teal and bright cherry red. At first, they’re a bit of a jarring sight when you see them on alternating nails, but after some time they actually seem to meld pretty well.

An out-of-towner accidentally drove his car into a deep ditch on the side of a country road. Luckily a farmer happened by with his big old horse named Benny.
The man asked for help. The farmer said Benny could pull his car out. So he backed Benny up and hitched Benny to the man’s car bumper.
Then he yelled, “Pull, Nellie, pull.”
Benny didn’t move.
Then he yelled, “Come on, pull Ranger.”
Still, Benny didn’t move.
Then he yelled really loud, “Now pull, Fred, pull hard.”
Benny just stood.
Then the farmer nonchalantly said,
“Okay, Benny, pull.”
Benny pulled the car out of the ditch.
The man was very appreciative but curious. He asked the farmer why he called his horse by the wrong name three times.
The farmer said, “Oh, Benny is blind, and if he thought he was the only one pulling he wouldn’t even try.”

I think this joke actually has a point. Unlike Benny, we do have others around us who are on the same mission. Reminded me of this verse: “Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.” (1 Kings 19:18).

Don’t despair, there are others out there who still love God and want to follow Him!

Random Thoughts #8: Star Wars, new food, & kindergarteners

License plate: DGTL AGE. Got that right!

Had Chipotle for the first time in years the other day!

Staring into a fire is so relaxing. And surprisingly inspiring. It’s like hearing narration by Galadriel or Lina Mayfleet or Indiana Jones.

Random observations from my daycare kids:
-“That’s not a ship. That’s Star Wars.” (Apparently Star Wars is a category unto itself.)
-“I don’t know anything about Star Wars. Except the lightsabers.” (Well, that’s a start.)
-“The world can hold a lot of stuff!” (Followed by a recitation of dozens of things found on Earth.)
-“Look, I’m a bell.” (Said while hanging onto a horizontal bar and swinging legs back and forth.)

This is what it’s come to. *all kindergarten girls start singing “Let It Go”* *all kindergarten boys groan and cover their ears*

I don’t know what everyone has against all the little creatures in Star Wars. The Ewoks are sweet and brave. Jar-Jar is funny. Eye-roll funny, but still.

Saw a real live dog wearing the “cone of shame.” O_O

When a pizza delivery car passes us on the road: “pizza angel, please come to me…”

Speaking of SW, I always thought that the time in between Episode III and Episode IV would be such a cool time to set stories 😎

20140318-031112.jpg

I have snow and ice wallpaper on my iPad—that’s how much I miss the stuff.

Gooey cheese 😀

Studying for the mass communications online class I’m currently in makes this extra funny: “When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, he had 3 missed calls from Chuck Norris.”

These are awesome and I haven’t had one in too long. And then I had some the other day *party*

Ever had Jicama? Described by my siblings alternately as “like an apple” or “an onion-carrot,” it’s sweet, crunchy, juicy and really, really good. 😀

Well, I’m sure that the squirrel would have LET itself be petted, what with how acquainted it seemed to be with strangers and how close it was letting him get, but nevertheless I would definitely NOT have let my brother pet the squirrel. Thanks for asking.

Hey! Had corned beef & cabbage for the first time this weekend!! I’ve always been fascinated with Ireland so having a famous dish from there was awesome!!!

Oh, and on this day of green, leprechauns, and gold, don’t forget to celebrate a man who courageous and sacrificially went to share God’s truth and love to Ireland.

Which of all the doll outfits I’ve made is your favorite?

Sci-fi girl

Sci-fi girl

This is an original design I had a lot of fun with 🙂  It is largely based on characters from Star Wars.

There are several parts to this outfit:

White pants (from the store)

White long-sleeved top (handmade)

Silver corset with skirt parts (the silver stuff for this came from the bodice parts of some store-bought doll dresses; I cut up, like, 4 dresses to get the parts I needed)

Silver halter top (also store-bought, this was originally white but I used silver glitter glue to make it match with the corset)

Belt made from a strip of elastic

Store-bought grey shoes

Lightsabers!  Made from chenille wires and foil

1. Just the corset

2. Hair down (I like it this way!)

3. Hair up for action

1.  2.  3.

UPDATE: I moved the silver corset and top to the Superheroine doll ‘cuz I liked it better  with that outfit 🙂

FYI, here’s how the Sci-fi doll looks now:

A bit more Jedi-ish, don’t you think? 🙂

Resources

First off, any and all creative ideas I get come from my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Everything I do is for His glory.

For me, making doll clothes has been an exercise in resourcefulness.  I get an idea, then I go hunting for supplies.  Mostly, I just use whatever we have around the house 🙂

However, I had a lot of help in actually making the outfits–in the form of some great websites that contain movie pictures, instructions, tips, and a lot more.  The following websites have been especially helpful.  I an extremely grateful to them for having these sites up and putting so many useful things on there.

LOTR Costumes (very thorough)

Molendrix (great doll dress patterns)

Costumer’s Guide (lots of screencaps)

Very Faery (on Arwen’s dresses)

Padawan’s Guide (Star Wars characters)

Fit for a Queen (good info on Star Wars females)

Wardrobe Door (Narnia Web’s comprehensive site)

I hope you are inspired to creativity, thriftiness, and resourcefulness, as I have been!

Obi-wan outfit

Obi-wan outfit

Obi-wan Kenobi is probably the favorite Jedi in our house 🙂  Since my brothers had this GI Joe-type Army man and weren’t playing with it too much, I decided to see what I could do with it, and ended up re-costuming it as the Jedi master.

The outfit is based on what he wears in “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.”  The shirt is made of a coarse material and the vest out of part of some socks!  The pants he came with, so I didn’t have to make them.  Belt is made from a strip of elastic colored black.  The boots aren’t quite right–they should be brown and in a cowboy-like style–but that seems to be an ambitious project I’m not going to attempt now 🙂

The lightsaber is made from green chenille stems and a bead covered with foil.
